NEW YEAR AND CHRISTMAS GREETINGS

The fundamental question of the philosophical discipline called ethics is what is the good and how one should act in order to live a good life. Every one of us is confronted with the same question day after day (except for those who know so little that they are convinced they already know everything). And if a thinking and feeling person is, in addition, an artist or even a cartoonist, he expresses his attitudes, his opinion on world events in the way closest to him, i.e. by means of a work of art.
As the year has met the year again, we share our feelings with our loved ones, family, friends, colleagues and, as is customary among artists, also in the form of New Year greetings and wishes.
If we take a closer look at this year’s collection of greetings from cartoonists and cartoon fans from home and abroad, we will quickly notice that in addition to the classic Christmas and New Year’s vignettes, there are currently dominated anti-war themes.
Indeed, caricature is not just boisterous laughter and cheap non-committal banter; a quality caricature always reflects the spirit of the times. If injustices are happening somewhere, if the most basic human certainties are being questioned, if innocent people are dying somewhere, the “Inter arma silent musae” can no longer apply there. Artists are very sensitive to all these horrors and they certainly cannot remain silent and not express their dismay, they cannot fail to point the finger if something bad is going on. And, of course, to express hope and wish that in the coming year everything will turn for the better again…
