Roger Penwill

Roger Penwill was born in 1947 in Barking, Essex, England. Qualified as an architect in 1972, worked in London as an architect until 1999, when he moved to the countryside to become a full-time freelance cartoonist. He has been drawing cartoons since he was young and published his first cartoon in Model Cars magazine in 1965. Since then his artworks have been published worldwide. In the UK, his works have appeared in The Times, Financial Times, Sunday Telegraph, The Countryman and specialist publications. He has published a number of cartoon books: Cartoon Aided Design (USA 1993), Cue Pixels-Action! (USA 1995), Modern World Cartoonist – Roger Penwill (China 2004), Assembled Cartoons (UK 2004), The Countryside Cartoon Joke Book (UK 2008), etc. He provides gag and editorial cartoons, cartoon strips and humorous illustrations for magazines, books, greetings cards, calendars, advertising and promotional material. He also provides studio caricature and educational text book illustration. All his work since 2000 has been fully digital. Roger Penwill won prizes in many international cartoon contests (e.g. 1st Prize – Eurohumor Cuneo, Italy 2000; 1st Prize – Pisek, Czech republic 2001; FECO prize – Eurokartoenale Kruishoutem, Belgium 2001; FECO prize – Deventer, Holland 2001; and many other prestigious prizes). He has been a judge in international cartoon competitions (UK, Greece, Turkey, Ukraine, etc). A member of the Cartoonists Club of Great Britain since 1996, joining its Committee in 1998. In June 1999 became UK President of the Federation of Cartoonists Organizations (FECO) and FECO President General 2001 – 2005; FECO Vice-President General 2005 – 2007. A member of the British Cartoonists Association since 2001. One of the founders and committee member of the Professional Cartoonists Organisation since 2006. He has been elected a Fellow of the RSA (The Royal Society of Arts and Manufactures). He is the originator and chairman of the Shrewsbury International Cartoon Festival, which has been running annually since 2004. Roger Penwill is living and working in Ludlow, Shropshire, United Kingdom.
