DANUBE CARTOONS EXHIBITION

TitStr

*****

The Danube – this mighty European river on its long journey from its source to its mouth into the Black Sea brings life-giving energy to many nations inhabiting up to 10 European countries.

An eloquent proof that the Danube river unites the individual Danube states and the peoples living in them not only physically but also culturally is also the exhibition with the distinctive name DANUBE cartoons, which has recently reached Slovakia.

The exhibition was initiated by the ARGE Donauländer – Danube Regions Working Group on the occasion of the Austrian Presidency of the Council of Europe in 2018 and has since is touring the exhibition halls of all the countries through which the Danube flows.

The traveling exhibition DANUBEcartoons presents the work of artists from the Danube region, who have interpreted aspects of cultural, ecological, economic and social life in the Danube basin in cartoons. During the preparation of the exhibition, great emphasis was placed not only on the high quality of the artwork, but also on the environmental criteria.

The individual countries of the Danube region are represented by the following artists:

  • Germany: Katharina GREVE
  • Austria: Manfred DEIX
  • Slovakia: Jozef VYDRNAK
  • Hungary: Geza HALASZ
  • Croatia: Petar PISMESTROVIC
  • Serbia: Toso BORKOVIC
  • Romania: Sorina VAZELINA
  • Bulgaria: Ivailo TSVETKOV
  • Moldavia: Valeriu KURTU
  • Ukraine: Konstantin KAZANCHEV

The opening of the exhibition DANUBE cartoons in Slovakia took place on October 25, 2021 in Bratislava at the Austrian Cultural Forum of the Embassy Of the Republic of Austria in Slovakia. The event was opened by the Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to Slovakia, H. E. Margit Bruck-Friedrich with the participation of Mr. Martin Eichtinger, Member of the Government of Lower Austria, Head of the Bratislava County Juraj Droba, curator of the exhibition project Mr. Gottfried Gusenbauer (director of the Museum of Cartoons in Krems, Austria) and invited guests.

JUBILANTS OF THE CZECH UNION OF CARTOONISTS

The Czech Union of Cartoonists (CUK) is a professional association of cartoonists from the Czech Republic, which will soon celebrate the venerable 30th anniversary of its existence.

As Roman Jurkas, a member of the Union Committee, wrote to us, they adhere to a very nice and following custom in the CUK:

“Every year we organize our members who celebrate their jubilee in that year (60, 65, 70) , 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100, etc.) an exhibition entitled “JUBILANTS OF CUK”.

This year, the following members of the CUK will celebrate their round and semi-round jubilees:

  • Borik FRYBA            70
  • Bretislav KOVARIK  70
  • Milos KRMASEK      70
  • Jan PILLVEIN           75
  • Emil SOUREK          75

Congratulations !

Opening of the exhibition “JUBILANTS 2020” will take place on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at 5 pm. in Malostranska beseda, Prague 1, The Czech Republic.

We highly recommend!

*****

As Mr. Roman Jurkas, member of the CUK Committee wrote to us after the vernissage:

The opening of the exhibition “Jubilants of CUK” was released on Tuesday 3 March, again in the vestibule of the Malostranska beseda theater hall in Prague 1.
Exhibited by: Borik Fryba (70 years), Bretislav Kovarik (70), Milos Krmasek (70), Jan Pillvein (75) and Emil Sourek (75).
First, Radovan Rakus, the chairman of the CUK, spoke, invited all the gentlemen to the stage, and questioned them a little – where they take inspiration, time, and which topics they enjoy most. Then the band “Prague Castle Orchestra” played several songs that we sang with them. This was the end of the opening and the exhibition opened.
About 50 people gathered, friends and acquaintances who had a good time.
The exhibition is open one hour before the evening performance and is worth seeing.

CZECH DRAWINGS IN STRASBOURG, FRANCE

The Czech Drawing. From Strasbourg to Prague

7 July – 22 October 2017

Musee Tomi Ungerer – Centre international de l’Illustration
2 avenue de la Marseillaise, 67000 Strasbourg

The exhibition “The Czech Drawing. From Strasbourg to Prague” presents 120 works from private collections, mostly Czech. Preceded by their prestigious 17th-century elder Wenzel Hollar, four Czech artists of the 20th century and today, Adolf Born, Peter Sis, Jiri Sliva, Jiri Trnka, perpetuate the tradition of illustration in this country and its capital. One of the major characteristics of these artists is their strong relationship to the world of fantasy and dream, sometimes tinged with a biting humor, close to satire.

Wenzel Hollar (1607-1677), born in Prague, introduced the exhibition as one of the most outstanding engravers and draughtsmen of his time. During his journey in Europe, he spent a year in Strasbourg, from 1629 to 1630, in the workshop of the publisher Jacob van der Heyden. From this period some works lent by the Cabinet of Prints and Drawings, such as the set of four engravings “The Four Seasons” and portraits of Strasbourg. They testify to the acute sense of observation and the extreme graphic precision of their author.

Considered worldwide as a master of animation, Jiri Trnka (1912-1969) is the author of designs for nearly 150 children’s books. Shown for the first time since the exhibition at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris in 1959, his illustrations for the adventures of the Micha bear, the Tales of Old Bohemia, The Tales of Grimm, an unpublished “Alice in the Land of Merveilles “or Pierre et le Loup, are both poetic and truculent.

Trained at the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague, among others by Jiri Trnka, Peter Sis (born 1949) became an internationally renowned cartoonist, author of two books, each giving a very different view of Prague, “The Three Golden Keys of Prague” (1994) and “The Wall, my childhood behind the Iron Curtain” (2007, Caldecott Prize in the United States). His preparatory drawings for Amnesty International tapestries are dedicated to personalities like Vaclav Havel, the first president of the Czech Republic after the fall of the Wall.

Jiri Sliva (born in 1947), has published satirical and humorous drawings in the press throughout the world, including printmaking. His drawings with linear graphics, inspired by Steinberg and Topor, sometimes evoke the technique of engraving. Impregnated with the spirit of Prague, Kafka and the Dada movement, they show absurd scenes that provoke a laugh, sometimes squeaky.

A master of the grotesque and satire, Adolf Born (1930 – 2016), illustrated nearly 250 books including remarkable “Fables of the Fountain”, which made him known in France, and he was also the author of 63 animated films. His drawings, often inspired by Hieronymus Bosch, created a fantastic universe very significant to the imagination of Central Europe. Made in bright colors, they are populated by unusual characters and humanized animals.

THE MEDIA ABOUT THE EXHIBITION OF JIRI SLIVA IN PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC

Jiri Sliva is undoubtedly the most famous contemporary representative of the Czech cartooning on a global scale. Therefore, it is no surprise that the most recent exhibition of his artworks at the Hollar Gallery in Prague, organized for the coming anniversary of the author, enjoyed the extraordinary interest of the audience and the media. Here are some citations from the Czech media:

*****

Humor in graphics and in life. The artist Jiri Sliva exhibits drawings influenced by jazz and wine | Aktualne.cz

Pilsen native, graphic designer, illustrator and musician Jiri Sliva exhibits in Prague Galerie Hollar sixty works, influenced by absurd humor, a love of jazz, wine, coffee or Franz Kafka. The exhibition named “Stop Time” complements the author’s books with cartoon jokes, many of which were published abroad, as well as the children’s poems “Radio Reporting”. Sliva also included the posters from past exhibitions and two CDs with his songs: “Buy the drums” and “Do not think about it”. The exhibition, organized on the author’s seventieth birthday this year, is dominated by well-known etching Chaplin with the Mona Lisa, who holds in the arms in binders packed Mickey Mouse. It illustrates very well Sliva’s affection for combining things seemingly uncombinable.

In the Prague Hollar exhibits the humorist Jiri Sliva. Inspiration is music, coffee or clowns | Hospodarske noviny (IHNED.cz)

Sixty dozen artworks by a graphic designer, illustrator, humorist, musician, poet and upcoming septuagenarian Jiri Sliva will be exhibited from Wednesday in the Hollar Gallery at the Smetana Embankment in Prague. The exhibition of his works will run until 18 June.

Music is Sliva’s frequent inspiration. His drawings are also influenced by the culture of drinking coffee, wine or clown figures. The exhibition is complemented by books with Sliva’s funny drawings. Many of them were published abroad. To the exhibition Sliva also included posters from the past exhibitions and two CDs with his songs – they are called “Buy Drums” and “Do not think about It”. The exposition is dominated by the well-known drawing of Chaplin and Mona Lisa, who hold in the arms Mickey Mouse in a buzzard. The artwork confirms that irony and absurdity are not strange to Sliva. A separate section of the exhibition reveals a part of the artist’s privacy, including the activities in the Graficanka – the amateur band of the Association of Czech Artists Hollar, in which Sliva plays guitar. He started with drums and at the beginning of the 70s he accompanied well-known comedy pair Vodnansky and Skoumal in the Prague theater “Cinoherni klub”. In Hollar is also exposed the newest book by Sliva “Nonsense? Moonshine!”. Its cover is a symbol of the exhibition in Hollar called “Jiri Sliva: Stop Time”.

Jiri Sliva was born on July 4, 1947 in Pilsen, Czech Republic. After graduating from the University of Economics, he worked for eight years as a sociologist and futurologist. Since 1989, he has been a freelance artist. He illustrated over 170 books and published 13 own books of cartoon humor. Sliva was awarded many times at international humor festivals. Since 1981 he has been involved in color lithography and has organized many independent exhibitions in Europe and overseas.

The exhibition at the Gallery Hollar will also be open on June 10 within the Prague Museum Night. Three days before, Sliva will personally accompany visitors throgh the exhibition and present his new book.

The desire to have fun, to be among the people, to give ideas out of the pure joy of life, and its dwarfs belong to the characters of Sliva’s humor. This buffoonery is an element of nature, the natural formation of the humor of the essential needs of clowning. Nose on a rubber band set at the right moment transforms human conflicts into a circus gag? Sliva’s humor is irrational, but not mystical. We understand him well. It is human humor and humanist at the same time, the latest Praise of Foolness. The presence of poetry, irony, pataphysics combines Sliva’s drawings in many ways with modern art. Let’s not forget that at the beginning of the art of the 20th century there is a dada with an absurd, provocative humor. Slíva would certainly not stay up against Tristan Tzara’s claim, because modern humor is a shocking, joyful, liberating surprise for him. For Sliva is not very strange humor of surreal meetings of the sewing machine and the umbrella on the operating table. In particular, the humor of the Magritte type with its exaggerated objectivity is very close to his love for props and fetishism. Without humor, irony, absurdity, modern art and modern thinking are simply unthinkable. Sliva looks for banal moments and leads them to the ultimate absurdity. It could also be said that Sliva takes things and strange phenomena literally to prove their relativity or absurdity. Inner lability is about necessity Nym prerequisite Slívova whole repertoire of ideas, cranks, small irregularities.

Honore Daumier 1The main “star” of this unique exhibition is of course Honore Daumier (see the photo) – the personality, without whom we can not imagine any treatise on the history of caricature. During his fruitful life he created over 4,000 lithographs, characterized by their satirical focus, humiliating the figures of the then political establishment and manners of bourgeois society.

Honore Victorin Daumier was born on February 26, 1808 in Marseille in the family of a glass artist and framer. The talented youngster at first develops his talent under the guidance of the painter Alexander Lenoir and later he takes lessons of painting at the Academy Suisse. Regularly uses to visit the Louvre Museum, where he draws according to the works of the old masters. Soon he became acquainted with new innovative graphical technique – lithography, which charmed him with wide range of expressive possibilities and utilizing. His first lithograph he publishes in 1829 and immediately is becoming a regular contributor to the magazine “La Silhouette”, for which he creates many satirical caricatures. Subsequently in 1931 he passes to the newly established journal “La Caricature” which is the main medium for anti-government opposition. For belittling caricature of King Louis-Philippe, he is sentenced to six months in jail. In 1835 is founded the magazine “La Charivari” (instead of the forbidden magazine “La Caricature”), for which Daumier works during the rest of his creative life. His work are always marked by a strong social conscience, consistently he demonstrates the hard life of the poorest people. In addition to caricatures he achieved extraordinary results in painting and sculpture work. In 1835 is culminating Daumier’s severe eye disease which finally causes his total blindness. Four years later, Honore Daumier dies in poverty and totally forgotten. His work, however, survived until today and represents a decisive milestone in the development of the modern caricature.

Daumier’s exhibition is equivalently complemented with the artworks of the other four important French artists of those times: Charles Vernier (1813-1892), Philippe Jacques Linder (1835-1914), Antony Paul Emile Morlon (1845-1905), Eugene Guerard (1821-1866) and Henri-Auguste Pingot (1848-1870). Vernier focused to a similar topic area as Daumier and he was imprisoned as well for his satirical caricatures. Vernier collaborated with the magazine “Le Charivari” and the newspaper “Journal de rire”. At the exhibition is presented an extensive collection of his lithographs from the series “La Crinolinomania”. Linder, Morlon, Guerard and Pingot worked as a portrait and genre painters and sporadically also focused on the satirical work.

Bartak-posterPoster of the exhibition of Miroslav Bartak in the Wave club in Presov, Slovakia

*****

Stairs of glory of Cartoon humor in the Brain Sneezing Gallery will be decorated with a drawing by the Czech artist Miroslav Bartak. He is the first Czech author with the solo exhibition of his work, and this is his second show although apart 36 years.

At that time Miroslav Bartak presented his work in the Minigallery of humor, which had its head office in the foyer of the cinema “Klub” of the former House of Culture ROH. Stoic characters of his heroes emerging logic of relations and dependencies in non-traditional or absurd situations, they found their fans not only in Absurdistan.

Their astonished faces mostly without any expression of the mouth, cause a short circuit in the brain cells and a pointing smile of the viewers. His humor without words, but with the idea is in opposition to the words without humor and without ideas.

Rather ones to see than hundred times read.

The exhibition of this great master of humor, can be seen in the Presov Wave Club from 8th February until 15th March 2017

AN EXAMPLE FROM GÖTEBORG

About the fact that cartoons have the ability to beautify and sweeten our lives doubts hardly anybody. Nevertheless, this ability of cartoons is used in practice only very rarely. Therefore, we are always very pleased when we learn about the positive example in this area.

Swedish cartoonist Juraj Cajchan from Göteborg wrote us about his interesting and worth-following experience:

“The restaurant Gyllene Prag (Golden Prague) is one of the most popular in Göteborg. Few young Czechs and Slovaks after winning the lottery decided to open a restaurant with the motto “We do not cook gourmet wonders, you would be able to cook it too, but we will save your time and effort and it will not cost you too much”. People flocked there, especially students and artists.

I used to go there too and I always met some interesting people there. Sometimes I did drawing for them into the menu, and the fee in the form of food and good beer I consumed immediately on the spot.

After the recent enlargement of the premises, they instructed me to draw something in a relatively narrow space on the wall behind the desk. Therefore, I sat there at the table my two cartoon figures – a man and a woman, who will be there sipping red wine. Place over their heads I filled with their thoughts.
Since the majority of visitors are regular customers, I did not want to create there nothing that could be read immediately without interest, but something they have to think about several times. I made a drawing on A4 format, which was then photographically enlarged on paper (3 vertical stripes). I worried a little about the line thickness in such a zooming, but in the end I was quite satisfied with the result.

Sometimes I go there, but my glass of red wine does not remain eternally filled as with the two on the wall. But with this, I reconciled long ago.
